MATHCOUNTS is a nationwide math competition series for middle school students (grades 6–8) that emphasizes problem-solving, critical thinking, and teamwork. The competition includes multiple rounds: Sprint (individual timed questions), Target (short-answer problems), Team (collaborative problem-solving), and Countdown (fast-paced head-to-head). Students who perform well in school and chapter rounds can advance to state competitions, and the top performers at state can qualify for the national MATHCOUNTS competition, gaining the chance to compete with the best students from across the country.
Competition Specific Resource:
The AMC 8 is a 25-question multiple-choice math competition for middle school students (grades 6–8). Students have 40 minutes to solve problems that focus on problem-solving, logical reasoning, and number sense, covering topics like arithmetic, fractions, geometry, basic algebra, and probability. The contest encourages creative thinking and mathematical confidence rather than rote memorization. It’s also great practice for AMC 10 and AMC 12 in the future. Participants can earn certificates, honor roll recognition, and official practice exams and resources are available through the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).

Math League is a series of math contests for grades 3‑12, offering individual and team rounds from elementary through middle and high school levels. The middle school program (grades ~6‑8) features several contests throughout the school year and culminates in a National Championship for top students.
