A familiar OSS Mu Alpha Theta tradition for the summer is going to the National Convention, and our mathy Orcas this 23-24 year competed at Las Vegas! We were proud to have taken 9 dedicated members to the National Convention, with 7 from the Mu Division, 1 from Alpha Division, and 1 from Theta Division. Even against some of the most fiercest competitors in the ocean, our Orcas managed to stay victorious with the Mu Division claiming 4th place overall, 6th in Relay, and 8th in Hustle. The Orcas also did amazing in their respective events as well, throughout the various divisional Topic Tests and Individuals Tests. Again, congratulations to these amazing mathletes and we look forward to a continued amazing future for OSS MAO. The full results are below:

Once again we are pleased to have participated in the National Convention. We took 13 members to the University of Arkansas to compete in the 2023 edition: 3 members competed in the Theta Division, 7 members competed in the Alpha Division, and 3 members competed in the Mu Division. We placed 10th in Hustle, 4th in Relay, 12th in Mu Division, 7th in Theta Division, and 5th in Alpha Division. Additionally, we placed 7th overall in sweepstakes. We are proud to announce this is an unprecedented performance for our school in sweepstakes. Our members also won an abundance of individual awards. Congratulations to all members that participated! Congratulations to our mathletes, who won 6th place overall and our students who performed superbly in their respective events! On January 23, 2023, OSS Mu Alpha Theta Honor society hosted the FAMAT January Regional math competition. We had a very successful turnout with almost 450 competitors from all over the state of Florida competing in 6 divisions: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculus, and Statistics. Congratulations to our Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Precalculus, and Calculus teams for placing 2nd in their divisions. Additionally, kudos to Aidan Q. and Omer D. for getting individual placements in Precalculus and Calculus divisions, respectively. Thank you so much to all our participated students and volunteered staff and parents for a successful competition. We look forward to being able to host this regional for years to come and growing our turnout each year. Â
Orlando Science Mu Alpha Theta competed in the Helen Dostal, Barbara Nunn, and Susan Hiller contests. In these tests we received team awards for the school as well as individual awards. Our team awards include placing 4th in the Hiller Contest (Orlando Science Middle School), 6th in the Nunn Contest (Orlando Science Middle School), 5th in the Nunn Contest (Orlando Science High School), and 5th in the Dostal Contest (Orlando Science High School). Congratulations to all the Orlando Science MAO teams for these achievements! Additionally, we are proud to praise Aarit Dixit (14th place individual in the Hiller Contest), Teja Dhulipala (11th place individual in the Nunn Contest), Arav Sonawane (12th place individual in the Nunn Contest), Rashed Abedeen (19th place individual in the Nunn Contest), and Omer Demir (19th place individual in the Dostal Contest) for their individual achievements in these contests! Last but certainly not least, Orlando Science High School received 4th place in the overall school sweepstakes. We are extremely proud of all participants! Our Orlando Science Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society successfully ran the annual Central Florida Math Tournament (CFMT) for 4th and 5th graders, with a very successful competitor turnout. The competition consisted of a 50 minute sprint round followed by a 30 minute problem solving round. In the sprint round, 5 points were awarded for correct responses, 1 for blank responses, and 0 for incorrect responses. In the problem solving round, 10 points were awarded for each correct response.Â
Winners were determined by adding up the scores from both rounds. The champions of each division received Apple iPads, the first runner-ups received Fire HD 10 tablets, and the second runner-ups received Fire HD 8 tablets. The top 3 places for each division received trophies and places 4 - 20 of each division received achievement medals.Â
Congratulations to all, and a special thank you to Mr. Akyalcin, Mr. Cooper, and the members who assisted both at the competition and in writing the tests.Â
Please join us in congratulating Omer D. (grade 11), Teja D. (grade 9), Sathwik D. (grade 11), Jaithra N. (grade 11), Aaditya N. (grade 11), Aidan Q. (grade 10), Joshua O. (grade 10), Brayden C. (grade 7), Rashed A. (grade 8), and Aarati A. (grade 8) for performing well on the AMC 10/12 B and qualifying for the AIME test. These students will participate in the AIME exam on February 7, 2023, between 1:30 pm ET and 5:30 pm ET. If they do well in this exam, they will have the opportunity to participate in the USA Mathematical Olympiad and Junior Mathematical Olympiad (USAMO and USAJMO).Â
